My expectation included me going on a ride along but this was before I knew what I was going to be doing. At the beginning all I knew, at least what I thought I knew about my mentor was that she was a cop. Turns out she is not a sheriff but works with the towers that make our phones, radios, and internet work. It as a very interesting day. The day started out driving an hour away towards San Diego and waited behind a gate for my mentor to come. She then led me to her office space where she took me to meet most of her bosses and co workers. They were all so nice and one of them even explained how the towers work. Once I met everyone in that building we went to the one next door where we started downstairs where she showed me all the wires and hardware that was needed to control all of the sites they had, and let me tell you that there was a lot of wires in rows. Once we exited the room we went up an elevator to a room where it was split up, half of the room was all about radios and the other half was phones. I learned that if I were to call 9-1-1 my call would be going to the phone side of the room where they would respond and help me.
After meeting the supervisor in the room who explained the two sides of the room we left the building and went to another building that was four minutes away from her office. There I met more people and was introduced to my mentor's old partner. She showed me what she used to work on before switching ti her present job, which was installing radios in undercover detective cars, sheriff cars, and detective cars. I then met the people who were in charge of programming the radios. They had a lot of work especially because they have two hundred customers to satisfy. Everyone was very nice and welcoming, everyone I met introduced me to what they did on an everyday schedule and how the computers are a big part of their job. Once we left the building we went to go eat and then took me to one of their many sites located on the mountain that overlooks San Marcos Lake. It was such a pretty view, and once we were up there she showed me the room with more wires and hard drives that communicate back to the base and to other radios. She told me that the weeds get pulled out by "trusties", which is a name used to call prisoners that have less than a year left in their sentence. Overall the day was a great experience although I expected a whole other experience.
Some questions that I asked..
1) Where did you get educated and how did it prepare you for your job?
Prior training in the prior communications captor
2) Why did you pick this career? Did you always know you wanted to go into this field?
No, I did not always know I wanted this career. I originally wanted to be a deputy but by the time I had gotten my citizenship I
felt I was too old to pursue my first career choice.
3) What excites you most about your job?
My job includes going to different sites that are on mountain tops. It is a rewarding job just knowing I am helping people. A
lot of lives depend on this.
4) Can you get promoted to a higher level/field of work? If so would you take the opportunity?
Yes, you can but I would not take the opportunity, it would be too stressful.
