Being at the middle school, although enjoying helping and being around the kids, I feel like teaching in a classroom may not be what I want to do, but maybe there is still a possibility for me to teach children and adults English abroad. I am still not sure what I would like to do when i’m older of which career path I want to follow but I am looking at the different career choices that seem interesting to me, such as marine biology, and interior design. I am still figuring out what I want to do, for college I am thinking of going to Palomar College for the first two years of general education, and once I have figured out what i am going to study I will transfer to a school that I has my major and continue on. Next years internship I will try to get an internship in either marine biology or interior design. I feel like i would benefit from specifically those two jobs because I get a feel of what it is like to work in that field

As part of my interest in planning and making events appealing to the eye, I decided to base my project around making Advisory Olympics fun and organized for the advisories. I needed to plan accordingly and create the directions and rules to each game. Aside from creating the rules and directions, I needed to find resources and supplies from what we had in a storage closet at the school. There were many supplies that were found in the closet but a lot of the supplies needed to be bought. I was also in charge of making the shopping list, not only that but I was in charge of making sure the few volunteers knew what they were doing, I would make sure to answer any questions they had and direct them to their event. This project was important to mostly the students because it is a time where they can work in a team to win the olympics. Not only does it excite the students but also the teachers, a lot of competition is seen throughout the day which shows grit from each team. It is important to me because it showed how the school all come together and see how much school spirit there is. The time I spent working as an intern was meaningful to my education because even though I wasn't learning about English, history, math, and other general classes that you would usually take, I was learning people skills. I was not only working with my mentor and his colleagues, but also with students who are growing and learning each day. I had to be helpful and encourage students using a different way, not only encourage, but help out with their projects, give them critique, and ideas on how to make them challenge themselves. This has taught me how to communicate with others in an even more respectable way when talking about their ideas and products.
One of the requirements for this internship was to have a project of our choice that would benefit the company that we were interning at. At the place of work I am interning, which is a middle school, they plan this event every year called advisory olympics which is an event that all the advisors and advisees come together as a team and try to beat other advisorys to be the advisory olympics winner. There were many things I had to take care of in order to contribute and make sure the event was going to be fun. I had to take care of things such as going into a storage closet and trying to gather every supply we needed and had, and then go back and make a list of items that we needed to buy. There were also different games within the event that were missing rules and directions, which is another thing I took care of, basically creating the rules and directions. In the end it turned out to be a great day, everyone seemed to have fun while also being very competitive. When I was first introduced to internship I took it as a time that I was going to put one of my many career choices to the test to see if I would like to continue working in this field. I was excited to leave school for a month to figure out what I wanted to do when I am actually choosing what to do, and which classes are necessary to take in college to work towards my career. If internship wasn't an option, I believe I wouldn't get as much of a feel for potential careers. It is also a great experience to have when in high school because it gives you a taste of what it is going to be like after school. These five images are just a preview of what I have been working on and the space I have been in. Every day has been me constantly helping students with their products, giving them helpful and kind critique, ideas on what they could make. I also got to work on making advisory olympics as fun as can be, basically it was a day were each advisory competed against each other to see who would be the final winner.
For the first Internship I had I tried to communicate with my mentor about what time they would like me to come in and work, I would wait for the response and end up not doing anything because there was nothing for me to do. I wasn’t advocating for myself throughout that week, I don’t exactly know why, but I just told myself that it was only a temporary thing, that I’m going to be working more soon and get everything done. That is also the reason why I didn’t involve teachers, I just thought that it was going to get better, since it was only the first week. After that experience I had found that I need to advocate for myself more with the new internship I found. I have been advocating during this internship because I don’t always know where tools go or how to use certain tools, so I ask for support and help when I am lost. I have also seen students ask for support, either that they have asked me or the teacher, which I think is great that they don’t feel embarrassed to ask, or feel like they need to hide being uncertain of things in order to “fit in”.
In the middle school, there is an event called advisory olympics which is a fun filled day with different contests and activities. Each advisory will have an opponent they will need to win against, the other opponent being another advisory. I am going to be taking part in this by helping come up with the different activities and the directions and rules to each one. I plan on going to meetings where we talk about the different possible activities, to contribute my ideas about the rules and directions. During this time I am going to need to be creative and communicate my ideas to staff members in the meeting. I am hoping that the ideas i'm going to be contributing will help make the day even more fun and exciting.
What are your main duties and responsibilities?
I teach seventh grade maker space during first semester, and eight grade second semester. We also have advisory and we need to do staff development either that means us leading something or participating. How did you end up doing the job you do, and why did you choose to come to High Tech High? I worked in college with after school programs and enjoyed it and it helped me decide to get into education that way, then my previous career was working as a director for after school programs for nine years which also made me want to go back into class and teach at high tech high. I visited the school and was talking with the directors at the time, and thought it was a cool and creative place and liked what the teachers and the students were doing here What does a typical work day look like? We start at 8 and have meetings every morning for half an hour and prepare for the day, have advisory usually and then getting set up for the day whether that be putting materials out and checking in with students on their projects and just supporting them. How important is it to get along with other people in your career? Extremely important because a lot of out projects are collaborative with other teachers so we need to plan the projects together and communicate what we want to do and how things are going What other personality traits, skills, or knowledge are important here? I think flexibility and creativity and hard work ethic and being dedicated to students Is there anything else you think I should know about continuing on with the internship? One thing that you will see is that there are many different abilities and different passions of students and meet their needs and support them. Meet with as many kids as possible and encourage them to do their work. This internship is different from my previous internship because I am now working with younger students and helping them work hard in creating the best product they can. I need to offer a lot of support and feedback to each student. There are four different classes with no more than twenty five students. Since going to High Tech High I have been introduced to the maker space and was taught to learn how to use the different tools and programs. This is really helping me throughout my internship because I am able to help other students with programs such as adobe illustrator to cut from the laser cutter and using power tools to put some projects together. I am helping out a student who at first didn't know what they were doing and didn't have an idea at all, but now I am helping her make a star lantern using the laser cutter. I really enjoyed helping her come up with the idea and especially how excited she was when she knew what her product was going to be. Although I already had skills such as organization and helping others, I feel like during the first week I have been growing stronger and gaining new skills such as patience and having to speak to people that I don't know. Getting to this internship is easy because I am lucky enough to have my own car, I get to drive myself to the internship everyday. My workplace is full of creative minds and tools, It is a place where creative minds are encouraged to create pieces they are excited about. I like getting to help students figure out what their next step with their piece will be and helping to create a project from scratch. The students are nice and my colleagues are fun to work with because of their positive energy and I also really enjoy getting to work with other teachers within the village. As I have been working I have noticed that a lot of students and staff members rely on my mentor to mostly laser cut different things for them, such as right now we are working on laser cutting a game board and pieces for the elementary school art teacher. I am really excited to see the final products that the students come up with, other than that I am not really worried about anything, just excitement from here on.
While most students went to their internships for career day I was lucky enough to do my career day with Professor Scaduto, an English Major, who teaches students at MiraCosta college. Although it is not my internship, I am still interested in becoming a teacher. When I had contacted her to see if I was able to shadow her she said yes excitedly. My expectations for today was to learn how to teach students and plan a lecture. I thought there was going to be a lot of students in the classroom and a professional and serious atmosphere. When we arrived to the campus and I was showed the three different places that she usually goes to, such as the common space she shares with some other teachers, her classroom on Monday and Wednesday, where her office hours are located, and her Tuesday and Thursday classroom which is where I shadowed her today. The atmosphere in the room was laid back, there were jokes being made , but serious when needed to be. My expectation of there being a lot of students was dismissed when there were only a couple of students in the class. I noticed that she goes through how to make a copy of the document and the structure of MLA format. While I was shadowing I also learned how to make a bibliography, and the difference between a work cited page and a bibliography. I also learned that there is such thing of a CRAAP test, which is a list of questions to evaluate the sources you find to make sure you should include it in your work. I was informed that if she were to be late to class she would call her secretary and her secretary would leave a note on the door or on the whiteboard telling the students that the professor is going to be a little late but to stay in class. If she were to be absent she would cancel class, if she were to be absent for more than one day she would call her secretary and ask to get a substitute teacher. Although this is a community college I believe the dress code would be professional, yet but laid back.
