Measure Your Own World
Description//
When we were introduced to the beginning of this project we started off with some worksheets, one worksheet was given to us to work on for two days and once we finished we would move on to the next one. We started off small, not jumping ahead of our selves. We worked with 2D shapes and worked on finding the volume with the correct formula. Once we got the hang of it, which was quite quick, we moved on to 3D shapes. Once we started getting more confidence we moved on to complex real world situations and used our knowledge and skills to put everything together.
What We Measured//
For the “design your own project” project, my partner and I decided to find the volume of three different heels. To be clear we only measured the heel part of the shoe, not the whole shoe. In order to do this we needed to measure the heel’s height, width, and for one shoe we also needed to find the length. The three different shoes that we measured were a wedged heel, kitten heel, chunky heel. These are the measurements:
Wedged Heel Kitten Heel Chunky Heel ---------------------- ------------------- ----------------------
Height// 3.2 inches Height// 2.5 inches Height// 3.5 inches
Width// 2.5 inches Width// 0.4 inches Width// 0.6 inches
Length// 8.5 inches
Math//
For the wedge heel we turned it into a rectangle because we saw that the heel looked like a triangle. For the chunky, and kitten heel we turned it into two cylinders. I found out that the volume for the wedged heel is, 34. Volume for the kitten heel is, 4.93. Volume for the chunky heel is 34.36. Doing this project was interesting because when you think of shoes you think of how they will look on you and how tall you want the heel to be, but never the volume. It was interesting to find the volume of each of these shoes. At first we wanted to find the volume of the whole shoe but we realized it would have been a bit more complex so we chose to calculate the heel portion. Getting the measurements were quite simple but the harder part was being precise with our measurements. Overall we successfully completed the project and it was fun, especially because my partner and I work very well together.
Reflection//
In the beginning of this project I felt like I wouldn't be able to understand how to complete the problems. As I worked through I asked for help and started to understand it more and more each time. At the beginning it was a bit of a review because we would find the volume of simple squares and rectangles, as well as triangles. It was great to start off reviewing because its a great way to bring up our confidence, just as much as it brought up our motivation to continue on. The worksheets really helped as well because it was like taking one step at a time. Once we had gotten to the Design Your Own Project part it was entertaining because we got to pick who we wanted to work with and we got to choose what we wanted to focus on measuring. This way we would be even more interested than we already were. I am personally glad we continued on with this project and got to use creativity to motivate ourselves.
